FLOATING WITH EYES CLOSED

JON CUYSON

Jon Cuyson is a visual artist and filmmaker who has been working primarily as a painter for the past two decades. He has expanded his interdisciplinary practice to include photography, sculpture, installation and the moving image. The new paintings featured in his solo exhibition “Floating With Eyes Closed” represent his continuing exploration of abstraction that shuttle between illusion and objectness. The artist employs both formal and conceptual strategies to produce works that draw from memory, movement and the narrative of the sea to open new subjectivities.

  • “I am interested in making work that simultaneously becomes a sign, a metaphor and a vehicle for transcendence while interacting with its physical and material presence.”

    - Jon Cuyson

Drawing from post-conceptual abstraction, Jon Cuyson’s minimal acrylic paintings on unprimed canvas reveal their material support while shifting the viewer's perspective using geometric compositions of everyday signifiers from the artist’s cosmology such as tape, foam, louvers, tubes and the utilitarian Good Morning Towel. His interdisciplinary works employ different techniques and media where he investigates the complex intersections of labor, diaspora and identity.

Jon Cuyson received his MFA from Columbia University in New York in 2010 and has exhibited locally and internationally, including the group exhibition Motions of This Kind in London in 2019. He is also included in the upcoming exhibit “An Elusive Edge: Articulations of Philippine Abstraction” curated by Patrick D. Flores in the new Metropolitan Museum of Manila located at BGC. “Floating With Eyes Closed” is currently on view at Artery Art Space located in 102 P. Tuazon Blvd. in Cubao, Quezon City from October 8 to 29, 2022.
