ARTIST NOTES

Bjorn Calleja

I find these touch-based creative expressions very sensual, I would like to think that creation, whether biological or art-making, stems from the same energy. My digital artworks are mostly fragments of the traditional pieces that I do (the animations frames are details of larger paintings, and I also make collage using digital cutouts from my old paintings) I think of computers and the technology as translators in order for my art to be able to communicate in the digital platforms.

With drawing and painting, the dialogue between the artist and the medium is very direct, we are offered traces of the motion and gestures of the artist, the traditional practice also allows for happy accidents and gives room for errors, which I find very human and I think that’s beautiful. I sometimes produce pieces that are fully digital, I think it is an amazing tool, especially for artists who strive for technically sound aesthetic, but personally I feel limited to faux drips, splatters, globs and textures which for me doesn’t give the same vibe.

I put much of my process into chance, every time I work is an opportunity to explore new paths. There's an element of learning and unlearning every step of the way. Sometimes its spontaneous and sometimes its pre-determined. There's always room for failure and self doubt but I take it as time to stop and do something else, like playing chess, browse books, and drawing.

I used to work with concepts that are political and religious because I find them directly a take away from being born a Filipino. Now I’m recalibrating my art practice into a much deeper sense of Painting. Trying to sort out what I want to do in a Painting.

I’m a believer of putting things into random and more abstract. There's a feeling of boredom you get from a painting once its beautifully done.

Although my art practice in graffiti, fine art, and architecture somewhat lies on various spectrums in the art world, these fields were solid foundations on where I anchor my perceptions, concepts, and ideologies. Material explorations and constructions rooted in Architecture. Independence from preconceptions and nonconformity from Graffiti and Street Art. Approach on aesthetics, systematical awareness through academical, sort of formal approach of research-based works that fine arts provide. Whether I do something on walls, public spaces, sculptural and material explorations, installations, or canvases, a fragment or two from my foundations manifest in my works.
